How to get to Pangani Cliffs Lodge
Pangani Cliffs Lodge is located on the beautiful Swahili Coast of Tanzania’s mainland, at the Ushongo site of the Pangani River. To cross the river, there’s a car and passenger ferry that runs nonstop between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.; the crossing only takes 5 minutes. Own Transport
From Arusha
- Follow the main road through Moshi, take a right turn at Himo in the direction of Dar Es Salaam, and then proceed to Segera.
- Here at the junction to Dar Es Salaam, continue straight on to Tanga for 35 km until the town of Muheza
- Turn right at the first fuel station on the right-hand side, which takes you on a dirt road for 42 km to the Tanga/Pangani junction
- Turn right to Pangani and to the ferry. The ferry crossing operates daily from 0600 – 2200hrs
- After the Pangani ferry crossing, go left and take the first left (sign to the lodge)
- Follow the road through the village for about 3 km and turn left (sign to the lodge)
- Follow the road for 1 km to the lodge
From Dar es Salaam
Follow the main road to Chalinzi and at the Morogoro/Segera junction turn right to Segera. At Segera, turn right and follow the Arusha instructions above.
Alternatively (only possible in the dry season):
- Follow the main road to Chalinzi and at the Morogoro/Segera junction, drive towards Segera
- After approximately 113 km, at the small town of Mkata, you turn right onto a dirt road which takes you to Mkwaja
- Continue on the dirt road to Pangani, passing the small villages of Sakura, Mikinguni and Mwera, following the road to Pangani
- Just before a strong bend turning left to the ferry, there’s a sign to Mikap to the right, take this road
- Follow the road through the village for about 3 km and turn left (sign to the lodge)
- Follow the road for 1 km to the lodge
From Tanga
- Follow Pangani road for about 45 km and drive to the ferry. The ferry crossing operates daily from 0600 – 2200hrs
- After the Pangani ferry crossing, go left and take the first left (sign to the lodge)
- Follow the road through the village for about 3 km and turn left (sign to the lodge)
- Follow the road for 1 km to the lodge
Fly in/out
From Tanga, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Pangani
The Pangani-Kwajoni airstrip is a convenient 20-minute drive from Pangani Cliffs Lodge, with daily services to and from Tanga, Saadani National Park, Dar es Salaam, and Arusha. For more information: www.auricair.com.
Boat-transfer
From Zanzibar to Pangani
A licensed and fully insured water taxi service is available between Zanzibar and Pangani. The boat trip takes about 2 hours and can be booked with our lodge. Departure from Zanzibar is in the morning (09.00). Price one way: 1-5 people $ 375 per boat trip, above 5 people: $ 75 per person.
Public Transport to Pangani
From Tanga
The lodge is accessible by public transport, but it requires an early departure and the final stretch may involve a transfer or motorbike taxi. There is no bus service directly to our doorstep. From whatever direction, your best option is to take the bus to Tanga and from there travel on to Pangani by dala dala or minibus (possible until 3 pm). Once in Pangani, ask to be dropped off at the ferry to reach the other side of the river. From there you can take a boda boda or book a transfer with us for the last stretch to the lodge. Alternatively, a more convenient and quicker option is to jump out at Muheza where we can arrange a reliable driver to wait for you and bring you to the lodge in 1-1,5 hours.
From Dar es Salaam
From Dar es Salaam and Bagomoyo there’s a very comfortable and fast bus service to Tanga, with only a few stops. ONe of the stops is Muheza, if you leave the bus at the Muheza busttation, we can arrange a driver to pick you.
